That's a fair point - I'll do a clean build of master; I was using the 
FG fork of 3.4.2 for this test, but it wasn't cleaned - so this result 
could well be something else. Once I've built master I'll redo the test.

I'll defer the rest of your questions until I get a repeat of the 
problem with master
